Agnosticism
Almost all debates on agnosticism are messy, because there are a few common ways to define what the term means. Here's a summary of the two main kinds of agnosticism and two possible assumed positions (agnostic theists and agnostic atheists).

USA in the 1880-1900s USA panicked that agnosticism causes suicide and feminism (!!), its courts rejected agnostics as witnesses and agnostics' books were sometimes burned. But it was regarded positively by academics, philosophers & the educated & eventually, as in the rest of the world, it became seen as sensible rather than contentious.
